The Country Angola is currently recovering from 30 years of civil war that ended Feb 2002. Tourism has been absent and is now being actively encouraged. Our operation is situated on the West Coast which was not mined in a National Park area and the roads and bridges are intact. Fighting was mainly in the East of the country over 1000 miles away. I saw more guns in Heathrow than I did in Angola. The local population is very friendly although the chances of coming into contact with anyone other than a local subsistence fisherman on the beach or the camp staff is remote. Its almost impossible to purchase anything in Angola without help and a lot of effort. The US$ is the only acceptable form of currency. Cash not travellers cheques. Very limited and expensive Duty Free at the Luanda Airport the gateway to central Africa. Prior to the war Angola was noted for its world class fishing that has only improved with time. As more anglers fish the area the true potential will be revealed. Many world records are on offer especially Tarpon. Angola will never be heavily fished, the infrastructure is limited to only small groups of anglers mainly from South Africa. All fishermen must take with them everything they need except fishing equipment into Angola. There are currently no shops to pick up everyday items such as toiletries or medication. |

Getting There:- Visas required which will only be approved if a letter of invitation for your visit is available to you. Flights are via Windhoek Namibia and take approx 3 to 4 hours each way in a charter plane, followed by a 30 minute drive. Or a Scheduled flight lasting 2 hours followed by a 3 hour drive. Eventually direct flights to Luanda may be possible but at the moment return ticket on BA costs £2500! Ideally a combined Namibian Shark Safari and Angola Experience would be the best and easiest method of achieving your fishing safari in Angola. Because it takes up to 5 days for an Angolan Visa to be approved and issued. So a week in Namibia followed by a week in Angola is the best option and offers excellent value for money. |

The Fishing Camps. Rio Longa Lodge is the first camp to be completed. Situated 4 hours south of Luanda on an island in the Rio Longa River. Approx 3 miles from the river mouth. Only accessable by boat. The 4 guest bungalows sleeping 2 anglers each are built on platforms connected by walk ways approx 4 feet above the ground. Each bungalow has shower and flushing toilet. Balcony over looks the river. No electricity as yet battery operated lights supplied. The Island base is totally secluded only reachable by boat. The river does have a crocodile population and the bird life is exceptional. Turtles can be seen as they nest on the beach opposite the camp. Superb photographic opportunities abound. This is not 5* luxury but its clean, flush toilets, showers and comfortable. You are after all situated on a small island in the middle of a river. Mosquito nets are provided along with repellant but you are advised to take a course of malaria tablets and bring your own mosquito sprays and sun cream. |
The Fishing
Although fishing is in its infancy already the potential is awesome. There are opportunities for all types of fishing.
The river holds smaller Tarpon up to 60lb along with Sharp Toothed Catfish and mullet which provides all the fresh bait required.
The beaches approx 3 miles of sand between cliffs give access to many species. Snapper, Thread Fin and Kob of over 100lbs.
Many species of Rays and vast numbers of Guitar Sharks. Its rare to catch anything under 20lbs. But these beaches have hardly been fished except by local fishermen with hand lines so you never know what`s going to take your bait next.
Both lure, live bait and fish baits are successful. Fly fishing possible from the beach when conditions allow but very easy from the boat situated just beyond the breakers. Trolling also works well.
The tackle needed is all supplied except fly fishing gear. Standard low reel South African fishing rods and Penn 535 size reels loaded with 20 or 30lb line. 100lb mono leaders are essential.
A certain degree of fishing expertise is required. This is not a place for non anglers to fish. The ability to cast a low reel multiplier rod and to tie hooks and rigs is a must. Distance casting is not required. Rigs are simple and fishing is easy until you hook a fish then the action is usually long and hard.
It is difficult to catch a fish under 10 Kgs. Most fish seem to be in the 25Kg and upwards range.
Normally fishing is from dawn to about 11am then late breakfast / lunch followed by a siesta or river fishing. Beach fishing starts again at 3pm and continues to Dusk..
The full potential is as yet unknown new species are being caught by each group of anglers. But already one thing is very certain.
The fish are BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
